Baptism Under Empire
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.”
— Jesus · John 6:44A document read aloud in Spanish to uncomprehending shores, then conquest — the form of consent mocked by its own procedure.
No one comes to me unless drawn — drawn, not dragged. The Requerimiento dragged: a page of theology recited in Spanish before an empty landscape, a notarized record that “notice” had been given, and then the attack. The crown's own jurists eventually condemned the practice — the record condemns itself out of its own mouth.
This label distinguishes a factual historical record from the interpretation built around it. A well-documented event or influence pathway does not prove that no alternative history could produce a similar result. Grade note: the historical record and pathway are especially well established
Some indigenous leaders used baptism strategically within empires they were trying to survive — agency existed even under the boot; the coercion claim is about the boot.
