Culture
““You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
— Jesus · Matthew 5:14Christianity helped shape the calendars, festivals, names, art and moral vocabularies of many societies, especially in historically Christian regions.
You do not need to be Christian to encounter cultural traditions shaped by Christianity. In historically Christian societies, Sunday observance, Christmas and Easter, biblical or saint-associated names, Christian art and some moral vocabularies became part of public life. Their origins and later forms also reflect older traditions, state decisions, commerce, migration and secular change.
Each branch below ends in something you can check against your own life: your calendar, your Monday, possibly your own name. The why-it-matters is not abstract — it is on your desk right now.
