The Curse of Ham, Misused
“from every tribe and language and people and nation,”
— John · Revelation 5:9A misreading of Genesis was the slave chapel's favorite text for two centuries — race servitude built on a verse about a family quarrel.
The curse in Genesis 9 lands on Canaan, one grandson, in a family argument — and says nothing about race or perpetual African servitude. Two centuries of plantation preaching bent it into a prophecy of racial slavery. Jewish and Islamic readers of the same text never built a racial slavery on it; the misuse was a Christian invention, and it needed Christian correction — which, in the end, it got.
This label distinguishes a factual historical record from the interpretation built around it. A well-documented event or influence pathway does not prove that no alternative history could produce a similar result. Grade note: the historical record and pathway are especially well established
Jewish and Islamic readers of the same Genesis never built a racial slavery on it; the misuse was a Christian invention, and it needed Christian correction.
