Rest as Labor Law
“Then the Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger and lead it away to water it?”
— Jesus · Luke 13:15Christian Sunday laws are one historical strand in the development of later weekly-rest and working-time rules.
Jesus himself argued sabbath cases — the ox in the ditch, the bent-over woman — and the tradition of legislating rest descends through blue laws to the modern working-time directive. The lineage claim is deliberately modest: many forces built modern labor law. The category of rest as a legal right begins here.
This label distinguishes a factual historical record from the interpretation built around it. A well-documented event or influence pathway does not prove that no alternative history could produce a similar result. Grade note: attribution or causal weight is contested; both sides are stated
Blue laws were also protectionism for Sabbatarians, and their repeal is its own story; the lineage claim is modest on purpose.
