When Moravia asked for preachers who could worship in Slavic rather than Latin, two brothers from Thessalonica went one better: they invented a writing system for the language. Their students' final form of it — Cyrillic — now carries Russian, Ukrainian, Serbian, Bulgarian, and more. The alphabet of empires began as a translation project.

EVIDENCE VS. COUNTERFACTUAL

This label distinguishes a factual historical record from the interpretation built around it. A well-documented event or influence pathway does not prove that no alternative history could produce a similar result. Grade note: the historical record and pathway are especially well established

STRONGEST OBJECTION(S)

Cyrillic was later engineered by state scribes — built for liturgy, spread by empire; both halves are true.

The causal chain — tap (i) for detail
01Moravia's request for a Slavic liturgy The request for Christian teaching and worship in Slavic created a practical language problem: how could a community use texts it could understand? The mission responded to that need within a particular political and religious setting. This explains the connection between evangelisation and writing without suggesting that spoken Slavic lacked an existing culture.
02Cyril and Methodius coin a script Cyril and Methodius’s work is associated first with Glagolitic, while Cyrillic developed within the later activity of their followers. Keeping those stages distinct prevents the familiar alphabet from being assigned directly and unchanged to the two brothers. The shared thread is the production and transmission of Christian texts in Slavic languages.
03Cyrillic becomes the script of nations An alphabet initially connected with religious learning could be used for many other kinds of writing. As Cyrillic developed and spread, it served literature, administration and daily communication in different languages. That expansion is the cultural inheritance at issue; it does not make every later political or literary use of the script a religious activity.PRESENT DAY
